About the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC)

The IDC includes two components: the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. After completing both during this 12-day training, you’re eligible for the PADI Instructor Examination (IE), conducted by PADI Examiners.


To apply for the program, you must be a PADI Divemaster who’s been a certified diver for at least six months. See our FAQs at the bottom of this page for more details on eligibility.

  • What are the prerequisites to enroll in the IDC?

    You must be a PADI Divemaster who’s been a certified diver for at least six months. You also need to be an Emergency First Response Instructor, but you can earn this rating during your instructor training.

  • Do I need a medical clearance?

    Yes, PADI requires a medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

  • Do I need CPR/First Aid to start?

    Yes—Emergency First Response Primary & Secondary Care (CPR/First Aid) is required within the past 24 months.

  • How many logged dives do I need?

    You need at least 60 logged dives to enroll, and 100 dives to attend an IE.

  • How long does the IDC take to complete?

    The Aquanautics IDC runs across multiple scheduled sessions over approximately 2–3 weeks, combining classroom learning, confined water teaching practice, and open water training to fully prepare you for the Instructor Examination.

  • How much does the IDC cost, and what additional fees should I expect?

    IDC tuition starts at $2,300, which includes core instructor learning materials. Additional required costs typically include PADI application fees, Instructor Examination fees, EFR Instructor training materials, and training site fees. We provide a complete cost breakdown so you know exactly what to expect before enrolling.

  • Can I work internationally immediately after certification?

    Yes. Once certified, you can apply for instructor positions worldwide. Many graduates secure work at resorts, dive centers, and liveaboards in destinations such as the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Australia, and beyond.

  • What certifications can I teach once I’m an instructor?

    After passing the Instructor Examination (IE), you’ll be able to teach core courses including:

    • Open Water Diver
    • Advanced Open Water Diver
    • Rescue Diver
    • Divemaster
    • Select Specialty Courses

    You can expand your teaching qualifications further by adding specialty instructor ratings.

  • Will this course help me get hired?

    Yes. The IDC prepares you not just to pass the Instructor Examination, but to work as a professional instructor. Many dive employers prefer PADI Instructors because of the organization’s global reputation and standardized training system.
